Re: Need help doing Shell Programming in Unix Please Help Me!!

This is what I need done. I'm lost at this being a new unix user. Please help me with these projects. Here they are:

Objectives: Learn to use some to the file manipulation commands

Learn to use redirection and piping

Learn to create a simple shell script


Commands: cat, chmod, cut, echo, expand, grep, paste, sort


A list of all graduates from CVTC has been extracted from a data base

to a text file as a series of comma delimited fields in the following

order:

phone_number,first_name last_name,year_of_graduation,major


You have to call all of the CIS graduates in the 715 area code to see

if they would be willing to participate in a detailed survey of

graduate placement and career paths. You need just a portion of the

total list of graduates and want the fields in this sequence:

last name first name phone number (without area code)


You also want the list sorted alphabetically by graduates last name,

column headings at the top of the list and a line at the end containing

your name.


Using the unix text processing commands produce the desired list.


- Copy the file: /home/classes/unix-user/survey-data

- Set write permission on to this file.

- Using vi add at least 5 more records to it following the format

of the existing data. Use your name in one of these records.

All other data may be ficticious.

Write a shell script that will produce a 12-month calendar

starting at a given month and year.


The starting month and year shall be specified on the command line.


The months shall be in 3 columns arranged as follows:

4 5 6

7 8 9

10 11 12


Put a heading at the top of the calendar containing the

starting month and year and the ending month and year.

  • Hmmn, I used to use unix. Now use Linux. I may be able to help you out - i am a VERY QUICK LEARNER (I learnt linux in a day - was doing tcp/ip networking and all!!!)


    i haven't done any work on batch/shell scripts yet - but I was going to learn, so ill use this to start.


    I'll reply in about a week, (with how i went), but im not guaranteeing i can.


    also i lost my linux redhat cd; need to get another copy!!!! I will promise i'll try, though.
