calling a procedure from a function

ok, just 2 quick questions.

i have two procedures that are called like this:
[blue]
character(e,f);
ladder(a,b);
[/blue]
e and f are the x,y co-ords of the character.
a and b are the co-ords of a ladder.

i'm trying to do this in my program:
[blue]
if (character(e,f) = ladder(a,b)) then[/blue]
etc...

but i get an [red]error 143[/red].
can someone please tell me what to do!!!!! how do i call a procedure from a function??

the second question is:

is there a way of putting some graphics (sprites, lines etc) into the background of the screen and then putting some others into the forground?

    I dont know if it was just a simple mis-typing, but to use if(character(e,f) = ladder(a,b)) then..., Character and Ladder would have to be functions and not procedures.

    If they are in fact functions, maybe posting some code would help.
