Device attachment problems.

I'm working on a windowed application, in which I only want one part of a form to contain a 3D representation of the standard form inputs within the rest of the windows form.

I created a class that extends the Panel class, and was able to get DirectX graphics integrated into just the panel, however, when I try to attach a DirectInput device (mouse), I have to use the Form window, instead of the Panel.

I'm assuming that this restriction is because of how the input is captured, but is there any practical way of enabling/disabling directInput based on the mouse position or current focus?
