Jython, Python, and Java

Hello all, I am second guessing my choice of language(s) to learn at an early stage and was looking for input and advice. My original plan was to learn java first, then learn jython (which as I understand is basically python). My end goal of learning jython is because I use linux, machintosh, and windows, and would like to be able to run my applications on all three OS's. I don't want to stick to java because I have heard it takes much longer to program with than python because more must be done by hand. So basically my question is this: Is it a good idea to learn java so I can use jython, do I need to know java to learn jython, should I stick to java once I learn it, and should I just learn python and dismiss the idea of programming for different platforms.
