asp .net webpage doesn't play .dat file in browser

hi,

i m using media player component in aspx page to play .dat file......when i run the code from visual studio, media player open the file in browser(internet explorer 8) but when i go through the website and open the webpage browser doesn't play the file........ this problem is only with .dat file because i checked it for wmv file ... its working fine for wmv file
