What function should I call to play a WAVE or MIDI in Win98?

I'm working on a sound-core for a role-playing game that I am working on, and I am pretty sure that Windows 98SE has some built-in function to play a MIDI or Wave file in the background, but I have NO idea what the function is called. Could somebody help me out?
