Perl Noob Help

I no very little about programming. I want to learn but I have no teachers and idea where is Ideal to start. I started reading a couple of book on Perl but am uncertain if this is the right direction to take. What is the most applicable language to general programing? Should I stick with Perl? Is there a cover all language? Which language would be best for making applications?

I imagine these questions must sound annoying but any answers would help.

Thanks

There is no cover everything language, but Perl is pretty good. However, I would say that Perl has its main strengths in System administration (Unix/Linux environments) and Web.

If you'd like to get I book, I can highly recommend "Learning Perl" which takes you through the core language. After this book you can start to do more specific projects and learn other things.

    Hope it helps!
