serial port (rs232) programming in xcode?

i have a usb to serial cable, and i can get zterm to send commands to the device. i'm looking for tutorial on how to use xcode (or c/c++) to read the usb ports and tell me which devices are available, then send/receive messages. i've found a few explanations, but they seem to revolve around outdated material.
