You asked for suggestions, so:



1) If the requiring a login allows people to edit/delete their own messages after they have posted them, then it's worthwhile. Otherwise it's a pointless annoyance.



2) Threads should be sorted by the date of their most recent reply... in other words, active threads should always remain at the top of the forum. This is standard in virtually every forum/newgroup I frequent. If it's not done this way, threads will die premature deaths, even if there is an very active discussion, because they will get buried under newer post.
