Sound player process?

Just a little question... Does anybody know a sound player, that just plays a sound file and then shuts down, like a process that runs in the background? I should like to use that to play sounds "polyphonic" with a html page. Now I've only a [blue]BGSOUND[/blue] tag and that makes the browser change page when I play a sound and it's MONOPHONIC :-(
