I hardly have a clue as to how I can record real-time sound off of the sound card. Do I need to initialize a recorder/player for such a purpose, or do sound-cards spit out a sound format/file which can be saved and used again.

You could do this one of two ways;
1) Link your PC to a recording device like a portable MiniDisc recorder or even a stereo and record onto a tape or use a cd recorder.
What you would need is a lead to go from a (small headphone size) 3.55mm male jack to the red and white phone plugs. You can buy these quite cheaply at computer fairs or any maplins store, see www.maplins.co.uk
2) Use a program like ALLRECORDER available from www.allrecorder.com
This will record sound to an MP3 or WAV file for as long as you want it to ( or until your hard-drive is full ).
