importing datetime from a string

Hi all,

I'm new at working with SQL-Server and I'm trying to import (from a VB program) records where a few fields on the server are defined datetime and in my import program, I only have a string like '20040822'.

I've been trying to find if there's a function or some sort of operation for this (SQL or vb). Changing the datatype of the field on the server is not an option I'm told.
