recording a sound from microphone

Does anybody know how I can record something from the microphone input in a sound card?
I just know how to produce sounds. During my research I found this kind of port address: 2x6h, 2xAh, 2xEh. Does anybody know what it is for? I am used to this kind of address: 0x2f8(2f8h) COM2 (for example).
