How do i obtain a LensFlare effect?


A number of good 3d engines use this effect and it's really cool.
I've been wondering how I could obtain it and how I could calculate
the intensity of the flare depending on the position of the camera.
I,ve also thought that you could use a large bitmap to represent the
flare and modify it's properties to corepond to the camera's
position. The bad part is that I havn't figured out how to modify the
bitmap's properties to correctly match the real world effect.
