avoid playback while recording

hello
I wrote an audio application which randomely records and plays.
but when I record sound this is being heard from the speakers which I don't like. can I get rid of this feature through programming.can I completely mute the speakers through the program while recording.
please suggest

Iam working on Win 98,VC++(win api).

    Look into the mixer API (see MSDN). I believe the functions you need are declared in winmm.h. You can programatically do stuff that you would normally do with the Volume Control application.
