php newbie :-)

hey

i'm completely new to php and wanted to ask some questions:
-what do i neeed to create php sites? (like the runtime libraries in vb)
-where can i find good and easy to understand tutorials? (my first project will be a guestbook, if anyone knows a cool link)
-what else can i do with php except for guestbooks?
-do you think its useful to program with php? why/why not?

  • hey! :-)

first of all you need a php interpretor, installed as a module of your webserver (for some reason I guess you want to do dynamic webpages with PHP). As said you need a webserver too, to reach the sites you want to be interpreted by your PHP.

You can get an easy to handle webserver here: http://www.apache.org - The PHP-Interpretor itself you get here: http://www.php.net/downloads.php

I guess you are working on a windows system, for this reason you should download the binaries of both components for windows.

Last in line you need an easy to handle text editor, to edit your php files - here I can't give you a clue, it depends on your working experience, which one you will find best.

Tutorials you can find a lot on programmersheaven, if you don't find what you are searching for in here, you can visit zend's website (the developers of php), where you also find a lot of tutorials and stuff about php (www.zend.org).

With php you can do a lot of things, most of them are regarding to dynamic content on your website - you can do guestbooks, forums - and content management systems as well. PHP has got some powerful functions to help you, creating a website that is now dynamic, and no longer static.

  • hey!

well, 1st of all thanx for the quick answer, i now downloaded the

PHP 4.3.3 installer (description:CGI only, MySQL support built-in, packaged as Windows installer to install and configure PHP, and automatically configure IIS, PWS and Xitami, with manual configuration for other servers. N.B. no external extensions included).

is that what I need to view php files on my pc? if my webserver (arcor.de) says it supports php, what do i need to upload? and if it doesnt (havent checked)?

if that thing is cleared, ill start looking for tutorials!
  • So,

the installer for php you only can use - if you have installed a webserver on your local machine, and this is only to test php-files quickly.

If you want to test your scripts online - you only have to upload the php-files to your arcor-webspace, and then call the url of this files with a webbrowser.

A good beginner tutorial I've found here: http://perl.about.com/cs/beginningphp/

if you are looking for more tutorials, I guess you should google a bit - I've got many results by searching "php tutorials beginner" there

    have a lot of fun!

your problem sounds simple enough, a search engine might be a help. try www.google.com

well, my webserver supports php/mysql/ftp/ssh etc etc no ads and no costs and plenty of space. BUT, 15 kb/s upload limit and 200kb/s download limit. And last but certainly not least; the server is usually offline between 01:00am and 10:00/08:00am UTC

    its your call

  • Hi,

I can't help you with a Host except to say that it would be worth checking out a cheap service to start with. The problem with free services is usually reliability and the options available to you in respect to space and traffic. I use bargainhost.co.uk if that's a help.

As for the environment setup for developing your site, I found the following guide extremely useful:
    http://in.geocities.com/samdarshipali/apache-php-mysql.htm

I set up my own development environment using this as a guide and am happy to say I am up and running pretty smoothly.
You may also want to take a look at phpedit.com - this is a cool IDE for developing PHP and will help you as you start out as it gives colour coding and intellisense tips while you write your code.

I am also new to PHP but not to Software development and I found these extremely useful, hopefully you will too.

  • hey!

i cant set up my own server :( because i only have 56k dial up access and i cant be online all the time. i also cant use a cheap host because i live in mexico an do not have a credit card or something, im not even 18!
i really need an absolutely free host with php support, ftp access and at lease 10 megas of space.
plz plz plz help me i think im going crazy!!
  • and again...

i have a server running with plenty of free space... the only disadvantage of using my server is its bad upload (15 kb/s MAX!) and my server is only only (roughly) online between 8:00 AM and 1:00 AM UTC !!

but hey, its free and has a good php version running. Ofcourse it features a mysql DB and FTP. For the linux die hards, you can use SSH to work on your site..

    ITS YOUR CALL!!!

i dont care if your use or dont use my server for whatever.... as long you don't take too much bandwidth. I have a 4 GB monthly limit, so that can be a real annoyance if u would abuse my server...
