HYPERTERMINAL related topic

Currently I am a graduating student of Computer Science. One of our requirement is a Special Problem or Thesis. My planned topic is about data transfer using modem or telephone line as the medium. It is the same as the HYPERTERMINAL in the Windows OS. ALso I am planning to use Java as the language because of its platform independent quality. The problem is, I don't know how to implement this. Anybody can tell what to look or what class to find. Thanks.
