It is nice to know that you are interested in Game Programming.
I would suggest 2D games to start off with. There is a very nice tutorial in the net regarding the basics of game programming.
Type "Alex Russel" in any search engine and you should get it.
Also I have submitted a game "Mars Attacks" (with the source code). That was my first game...You can go through it.
