HTML or HTM

What is the difference between HTML and HTM pages? Is there a preference to using one over the other?

Thanks for your time,

It doesn't make the slightest difference. Both are file extentions for an html page.

I agree. The only time it may matter is that sometimes the default page of a site should be called index.html and the web server will not look for index.htm - most of the time, though, use whatever you prefer.

    Hi there,

Originally, when SGML was running the show, programmers had a convension whereby a document that was "under construction" was given the extension .sgm and a document that was "production level" was given the extension .sgml.

That convension followed thru to HTML (ie. HTM for "work in progress" and HTML for completed work) in the early days and is only still being kept for backwards-compatibility.
