Super Mario All Stars SNES - I want to correct the 'feel' to original

SMB1 port has always felt wrong -mainly not enogh rebound from breaking a brick block and too high of a bounce off enemies heads (SMB2 & SMB3 are pretty much exact as far as gameplay goes). The programs when disassembled seem to use a lot of common code but how do I narrow down which values to correct? Some real-time debugging sure would help.
