What to get into either XBOX or gamecube coding

I want to getting into coding on games consoles like the xbox or gamecube.

whats the best and cheapest route.

There isn't really a cheap route to take, everyone wants to charge you per product, you need a dev kit for all of them (to make legal games), and you are enforced with agreements that make things very difficult on your part. But if you want cheapest route, I would stick with XBOX because after the dev kit purchase you can still use windows compilers such as VB and C++(standard languages with out any bs on the side).
