New at Linux

Hi, I need a bit of guidance here.

I have 2 computers each with windows and linux installed.

I have no sound on either linux machine and have difficulty networking them and now connecting to the internet, as well as garbage being printed out when i try to access the printer.

I believe I need to recompile my Kernel, does any one no of a good tutorial on this subject or can offer any other advice.

Further spec... of my machines I can give... etc..

Any help would be appreciated

  • Ive made up a lil doc to help people who are new to kernel compilation...you can access it here

Try find out your sound card model beofre compiling and when you are in config look for a card that matches your one and make sure it is either 'y' or 'm'.

If you are using windows and linux in the same network, you must have samba (file sharing).

A good configuration tool for newbie linux users is Webmin (www.webmin.com)

Which kind of OS are you running?

I suggest you download the latest release of your distrubution.(it 's free, you know).

    Cheers,
