Seeing as this board probably has Linux 'gurus' on it then I decided to post this as none of my posts on USENET have been answered.
Anyway, here's the problem:
Whenever I want to connect to the internet on Linux the modem dials up
but does not connect - it cuts out halfway through the dial. I've
looked in the error log and it says that there is NO CARRIER CALL -
I've learned that this means that my modem isn't 'handshaking' with
the ISP. I use KInternet to dial up and I've used YaST2 to configure
the modem. The only thing that I haven't filled in in YaST2 is the
'initialisation string' fields as I don't know what these are for. My
ISP is Tiscali. I'm using an Intel HaM Voice/Fax modem 56K. The modem
connects fine on Windows (XP PRO). The modem is on dev/ham - whenever
I put it on dev/modem it simply does not respond. I've also tried
putting it in 'stupid mode' but this has no effect. I also get the
same result using an external serial modem. Does anyone have any idea
as to what I should do? Please help, many thanks.
