problem converting dropdown list item to letter

Hi, I'm a new to windows programming.I have a dropdown[combo] list with a list of items for example memory,dump,register. I've set up an edit box so the information selected will appear inside of it. This works correctly.ie...memory is selected so meomory appears in the edit box. What I'm having a problem with is if i select an item from the drop down list rather than the actual item name selected appearring in the edit box i would like a letter that represents the item instead of the word selected.Has any one any ideas?
[Code] CDialog::OnInitDialog();

m_Combo.AddString("Memory");
m_Combo.AddString("register");
m_Combo.AddString("Dump");
m_Combo.AddString("Edit");
m_Combo.SetCurSel(2);
[code]

[code]
void CDropdownDlg::OnSelchangeComboReg()
{
m_Combo.GetLBText(m_Combo.GetCurSel(),m_chosen);

UpdateData(false);
}
[code]
