message for lack of applet support

How can you do a platform independent message display for applets that will be displayed only if the browser does not have Java installed and working? I tried a few things below but they don't work well enough. If you have any other ideas, please let me know.

Generally, applets are coded like this when you want to say something in browsers that do not support Java applets.

This works fine in Firefox but not in many other browsers.

This does not work in all web browsers. In Chrome and Google, I found that the Java pluggin area will hide the hyperlink shown above.

The following code was tested in Google Chrome and keeps failing to show the hyperlink when Java applets are not supported.
