MATLAB resources

Hello! I'm a in a bit over my head. Was given a bundle of code and told to make heads or tails of it to find an already existing grid and make it larger as well as figure out how its dumping to speed up an animation process. Well in the process I have managed to narrow down what file it is that I'm supposed to edit. However, I have a very beginners grasp of MATLAB and figuring out the file was just half the battle.

Is there an online walkthrough that will immerse me smackdab in the middle of a code (i.e. where I am now) that can help me figure out what syntax i'm looking at and what functions are potentially doing? Essentially, some form of reverse engineering.

I have MATLAB books, I've checked out reverse engineering ebooks... none seem to get me where I want to go fast enough. Thanks for any response.
