Advice for a beginner

I'm self-taught in VBA and have developed many applications that I would like to distribute but can not because they require that Access be installed on each computer. Can someone suggest a language that I can learn and use to develop applications that will run on any modern computer without specific supporting programs like Access? Because of its similarity to VBA I'm thinking VB or one of the collection of languages that can use VB, like .NET, ADO.NET, ASP.NET, LINQ, etc., would provide a shorter learning curve. But I'm not sure if any of these will do what I'm wanting it to do.

As you can probably tell I'm at the beginning of a learning curve and will appreciate your help.
