how to check a command result

hi all,
i want to check the result of a command from a batch file. ex:
[b]set a='echo'
echo %a%[/b]

this works, but i want to check whether tomcat is running or not. i want to know the result of command [b]telnet localhost 8080[/b]. please help

    I think the best idea would be to store the output to a variable and run an if statement on the variable to see if connected or not, however it has been many years since I have used DOS and don't know if the telnet command can output to a variable, but if it can be, this page ( ) will give you similar examples, so just adapt them to your own code. Let us know if it worked, post the working code if you manage it. Thanks,
