I'm looking for a lightweight language to do simple text search / replacement / filtering. I have many years of C /C++ experience and don't relish the thought of installing visual studio. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

    Javascript is out of the question. Perhaps VBScript, java or another (non-MS) C++ compiler.

    As far as I know, JS can`t do file handling because of security issues. However, you might find Python appropriate for this:

    ACtually You can store anything you need in cookies and put them to expire in something like a year or two years or never, JavaScript is a cool tool for lighweight programming and testing of code, mainly because you'll need nothing to start, no compiler no IDE, nothing as for reading you can allways use streaming HTTP or read it as an open document...
