I think "Materialized View" is synonymous with "Snapshot". I've only ever seen them used with Replication. Their purpose is to create a sort of table that contains some subset of data from a table in a different database. For example, let's say there is a master database that holds all of the customer information for a company. You could set up an Oracle database on a salesperson's laptop computer and create a materialized view on that laptop which contains only the customers for that salesperson. To the laptop user it is like a regular table, but its contents can be refreshed from the master automagically.

Materialized Views can be either readonly or updateable, but having updateable snapshots is not something for the feint of heart.
