Integrate Access and Excel

I am a new grad working as a data analyst. I understand Access very well. However, I don't understand how to build an Access database on the backend of an Excel workbook.

I want to leave existing excel files so that i won't confuse users and dump the data into to access so i can manipulate it. i've read access inside out, and access step by step. there isn't a solution to my problem there. can anyone please help me find a resource?
