32-bit , 16-bit programs

Hi,
I'm beginner in IBM PC assembly programming. i would like to know the meaning of 32-bit Protected mode programs and 16-bit Real-mode programs. Which software i need for assembling - MASM 615 or the Visual Studio.NET. how they differ?

    .Net is only a virtual assembly language, wich means it isn't assembled to real machine code, only machine code to a virtual machine, and that slow. Learn MASM instead, (or FASM wich is much better and easier).
