how to find version of unix os within unix environment

Hi,

How should i find the version of the unix operating from within UNIX environment? In MS-DOS we have a command "VER" which displays OS name and Version Number like that, is there any UNIX command is there ?

    For version info - this should do
    uname -a

    However for other info - like distribution version - its specific to distribution.
