compression utility in Delphi

Hi;

1. My application has its own file type. What is the disadvantage if my application saves these files compressed and decompresses them before opening? (of course there's some compression/decompression overhead)
What is the reason that MS Word does not compress the file before saving it?

2. Is there text compression utilities in Delphi?

Thanx in advance...

    1. If the file gets corrupted, you might not be able to open it. An uncompressed file will open, but have some unreadable parts. This is probably, why ms word (and wordperfect, notepad, etc) do not compress the documents.
    2. You can find various source codes for compression on the internet. Any compression can be used on text files. You can use a character-based binary-tree or word-based binary-tree compression, or an ASCII subset instead of the full ASCII codeset. The last one will get you a very small compression ratio.
