Password login prob

Hello,
I was wondering how to use a password/login screen with SQL 2000 without having to check for the info from within the DB. Is there some way to store a variable on the client machine and when they try to login to verify that they are who they say they are? Also, I was wondering how hard it would be to move the database to another machine and how easily i could store user info to that database?

thanx
