First of all, can you program well? IM in the same boat as you, I want to program games but I have extremely little programming knowledge. I am and have been learning C++ for a while but so far I can't do a bit of graphics. IM currently reading C++ for absolute beginners which teaches programming through making games. There are also a lot of DirectX books out talking about ever-conceivable game programming information you would ever need.

If you want to do graphics (ie Not text games), try Allegro. It's what I'm learning. It's a graphics libarary and good for beginners like yourselves. Here are some super-duper cool sites to help you get started:

    http://www.talula.demon.co.uk/allegro/
    http://www.loomsoft.net/resources/alltut/alltut_index.htm
    http://agdn.netfirms.com/main/

Also, you can check out my source code for my volleyball game, a perfect example for beginners to get the main gist of what it is like:

You will also need this for it to work:

Personally, I'm trying to use OpenGL. It is abit harder but it and DirectX are what are used for most games. www.opengl.org
It's currently kicking me in the head over an auxillary file's function.. but oh well..

If you're looking for 'what game should I try to program?', I have encountered several sugguestions to make a tetris based game. It has limited moves, has a real time factor, graphic output, as well as sound. It covers most of the core of what a real game needs to make it a good start.

    That's my two bits.
Currently I'm in a group working with Game Maker 5 {I don't know why, but that's what happens when the 2 coders come in after the group decided} trying to make a side scroll space shooter ie:gradius
