Holding down keys

Im programming a Tetris game, and i need to detect how long the user has heald down a certain key and then put that information into an int variable- how would i do this?

    When you press a key, Windows sends your application a WM_KEYDOWN message, and when you release it, a WM_KEYUP message. Take either the system time or performance timer when the key down comes in, again when the key up, then subtract the first from the last.
