I am about to build a database program with mysql as the backbone, but I am wondering what is the best language to use?

    That depends on what language you are good at and what language you are going to write the things that will use your program in. I like to work with databases in Perl because it is very simple and easy to do.

    php rocks for web dev. but you can use pretty much any language that it supports. Usually I would use the language I am best at or based on what I am writing it for such as web or mac or windows

    I agree - Perl is great and has excellent support for MySQL through the DBI/DBD modules. But their are ways to getting to MySQL through all kinds of languages - there is an ODBC driver, for example, so you could get at it using Visual Basic if you wanted!
