How can I update the whole hard disk of a remote machine?

guidoreguidore Member Posts: 4
Hi there,

I am trying to update the whole hard disk of a remote Linux machine. First I have created
a ramdisk in the remote machine, upload the new image via FTP to the ramdisk
and run in the remote machine:
# dd if=/mnt/ramdisk of=/dev/hda

This worked fine most of the times, but sometimes it fails, where is the problem?

Best regards,

Guido.

    Hi,

the distro is Red Hat. 'dd' worked fine but, when I reseted the machine, it displayed: LILO loading (fine so far) but then it said "e2fsck ...." and something more that I don't remember. I think there must have been some process accessing /dev/hda while 'dd' was running.

    Thanks in advance,

    Guido.
