Most MS-DOS programs run faster than similar MS Windows counterpart. That's because in MS-DOS the program is the only thing running, while in MS-Windows (and Unix) each program must compete for CPU time with every other program that is running. For example, on my XP, Task Manager shows that there are 30 processes running and they must all compete for the same CPU time.

This does not mean that the MS-DOS program is better, it only means that it runs faster.
