defaulting protocols

VB5begginnerVB5begginner Member Posts: 66
this isnt necessarily a vb question...or a programming question...but how can i set a default protocol (? im not sure if thats the right word for it)... for example... IE uses http:// and AIM uses aim://...how could i make my own and make my program open when the protocol is entered in IE? (like the aim:// protocol opens AIM and runs the command...and mailto:// opens Outlook if Outlook is the default mail application)...

i will also need a way to set this from VB if anyone knows a way...if its just in a plain text (Input/Output) file then itll be easy, but its probably not...i would need a way to create a default "protocol" from vb... anything regaurding this AT ALL will be helpful...thank you

    Search for this in MSDN "Asynchronous Pluggable Protocols Overview"

    This would be the relative path in my MSDN:
    mk:@MSITStore:e:/msdn/inet.chm::/workshop/networking/pluggable/overview/overview.htm

    thanks but...hmmm...this is probably a really stupid question, but.... msdn???...i searched for "Asynchronous Pluggable Protocols Overview" on msdn.microsoft.com because this is the only msdn i know of...is that the right msdn?...if so it didnt give me any results and when i search for "protocol" on microsoft i get topics about ISP and TCPI...and i dont think these are the kind of protocols that im lookin for...

    and i do not at all understand this mk:@MSITStore:e:/msdn/inet.chm::/workshop/networking/pluggable/overview/overview.htm stuff...what does that mean? im really lost...sorry
