Application Optimisation - NTDLL.DLL

I am trying to optimize an application on a NT4.0

workstation which spends 75% of it's time in NTDLL.DLL,

split between routines RtlCompareMemoryUlong and

RtlFillMemoryUlong.

I don't call these routined directly, they are not

'called' in the disassembly listing. I would really

appreciate it if anyone could give me an idea how and

why these routines are called and what they do.

Cheers, Paul S.
