displaying grayscale image

i want to display a 256 level grayscale image. how do i do that with SVGA programming in DOS ?
and also i would like to give some formatted text display along with the image (like at the bottom of the screen). is that possible ?
I'm using Turbo C++ 3.0

    grey = (30*red+59*green+11*blue) then use rgb(grey,grey,grey) or how ever you need it. This works in 24bit and 16bit color mode
